how do you solve tan (pi/4) without calulator

tan = opposite over adjacent. Draw a picture of the unit circle, mark where pi/4 is, and look at the x and y position of it.

|dw:1317512859765:dw|In the drawing there's a right triangle. The trig identities can be remembered by SohCahToa (pronounced like soak-a-toe-uh). That stands for: sin = opposite/hypotenuse cos = adjacent/hypotenuse tan = opposite/adjacent pi/4 = 45degrees, which should tell you something about the right triangle in question. Specifically, how the opposite and adjacent sides are related.
