State the total number of electrons occupying the p orbitals in one chlorine atom?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Chlorine is #17 in the periodic table, hence 17 electrons of which 2 are contained in the 1s orbital 2 are contained in the 2s orbital 6 in 2p 2 in 3s 5 in 3p

Use the aufbau diagram to get at the answer to this, then it's easy; just go until you have 17 electrons or however many you need for any atom, then count how many were is particular type of orbital. In this one you are only in the 2p and 3p to get 17 total, so 7 are in the p orbitals. Learn your aufbau and these questions are easy

i think its a total of 11 in p orbitals
