Calc 3 - How to sketch image from contour map? Any good techniques?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have a midterm soon and I'm having a hard time picturing these contour maps and how to properly draw them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Don't quite get what the numbers mean and the spacing between the lines what represents what

OpenStudy (sriram):

the numbers probably are the height in meters above ground so the closer the line the steeper the slope coz the height is increasing suddenly and we ccan get this slope by calculating change in height/distance btwn the lines

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i hope this helps :D http://raider.mountunion.edu/~mcnaugma/Topographic%20Maps/contour.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sriram I think you're right but it's still kind of confusing could you expand a bit more? I think you mean the numbers are the increments of the height which for the first one is going at a steady pafe?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pace*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I don't quite get what oyu mean by the space, steeper the slope?

OpenStudy (sriram):

nope it is not the increase in height but the actual height 13 indicates 13 meters above sea level whereas -2 indicates 2 meters below sea level

OpenStudy (agreene):

One of the things I did when I was trying to learn this stuff was I made a fist, then drew lines around my knuckels starting at the top with small circles and then working my way down with bigger and bigger ones... once I had a few (maybe 5-6) I layed my hand flat and looked it over, made my fist again, flat again and eventually I just got it.. I dont really have to think about it anymore... so I dont know a good way of explaining it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so like 38, when it's 0? it's starting at ground level I'm confused with the negative numbers

OpenStudy (sriram):

yeah but bu even need the numbering to tell u how steep is ur fist for instance!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you said it's below sea level but do you show that

OpenStudy (sriram):

imagine it as the ground has been dug that many meters deep!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so it's a pyramid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you imagine 37?

OpenStudy (sriram):

well done buddy for 38

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or 36 the curves are so strange!

OpenStudy (sriram):

2 mountains and a path in btwn the 2

OpenStudy (sriram):

this was for 37

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh and 36 is just like an arc?

OpenStudy (sriram):

in 36 the hight is increasing suddenly and then there is a flat land height 8 meters

OpenStudy (sriram):

*height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you know what axis to know this on?

OpenStudy (sriram):

in 35 the land is like a hole in the center with high land on all sides like the one u get when u rotate ur hand un a bucket filled wid water

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like there will be 3 right if it's like 36 or 37 how do you know what goes at the origin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 axis*

OpenStudy (sriram):

i didnt get ur doubt?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like I know what the shape looks like but when you sketch it on the 3 coordinate axis, I just don't know where to place the shape. For 35 it's easy b/c it's like a tornado looking shape and you can place the center of the circle at the origin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but for like 36 and 37 where it's more just curves I don't know where to place the 3D shape on the x y z axis

OpenStudy (sriram):

simple just match the base of the 3 d mountains wid the diagram

OpenStudy (sriram):

for 36 u will have to dig in the ground a little and then a hill

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks a lot for your help! sorry for so many questions just want to be prepared for my midterm. Thanks again!
