2. A public health researcher examines the medical records of a large sample of men who died in 1999. Of this sample, she finds that 22.4% died with heart disease. Further, she finds that one third of the men in the sample had at least one parent with heart disease, and of this latter group, 32.7% died of heart disease. a) What percentage of men in the sample died of heart disease and neither parent had heart disease?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

22.4% of the sample group died with heart disease 1/3 of the sample group had AT LEAST one parent with heart disease (1/3) 32.7% died of heart disease. ......................................... What percentage of men in the sample died of heart disease AND neither parent had heart disease? P(0 parents|disease) hmmm....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lets say there are 1000 in the group so that we can forgo the decimals: 224 of them died of heart disease 333 1/3 had AT LEAST one parent with, that leaves us with 666 2/3 had NO parent with heart disease. 333 1/3 .327 ------- 109 people died of disease with AT LEAST one parent having it --------------------------------------- 224 -109 ------ 115 are left that died of heart disease in this scenario

OpenStudy (amistre64):

115/1000 = 11.5 % if its right
