i dont know if im in the right forum. i understand that religion is pyschological evolutionary by-product, to my understanding, it was used to explain things that didnt add up to the ancient human. but as we get smarter, as we learn how the world works, shouldnt religion be extinct by now?
I think some people would say there are still unanswered questions and things that don't add up. Belief systems also decidedly ingrained or traditional and passed on from generation to generation 'catch 22'. Also highly established forming a 'critical mass' and a status quo. Don't rock the boat :-P
You're in the right forum, History or Culture would work too. If I'm understanding your question, you're saying that "ancient" (how far back is ancient?) man needed religions to explain things that are now explainable and understandable by science and by evolutionary standards, since religions are no longer necessary to answer the questions that science does, religion is now superfluous. What does it mean to you that so many religions still persist? In tribal cultures (ancient) around the globe, they still practice Animism as all tribal cultures have throughout history. In our civilized culture and societies, we have made scientific advances that seemingly answer all the questions you might think religion would be needed for. But throughout the entire civlized world, populations insist on their religions even as they base their lifestyles on the sense of science. What does that mean to you, what does that seem to say about people? Does it say something about humanity or just a particular people/culture?
