is x=1 a solution of the equation 2-8x= -6??

OpenStudy (zarkon):

yes

OpenStudy (alfie):

it is not "a" solution. It is THE ONLY solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

yes and tht is tru alfie

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how is it the only solution? im confused

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

plug it in as x

OpenStudy (alfie):

Because if you solve it for x, you find just a solution. It is a first grade equation, it means there is just one possible solution. When you have a 2nd grade equation, you can find at tops 2 solution. When you have 3rd grade equation, you can find at tops 3 solution. And so on. Nevertheless, your equation is 1st grade, so you can find one solution, which is 1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thank you for the help

OpenStudy (zarkon):

I've never heard then referred to as 1st,2nd,... 'grade' equations.

OpenStudy (alfie):

Well, the English might be wrong but the math it's pretty right. 2nd grade is quadratic equation 3rd grade is cubic. In the R field you can find at tops two solutions for quadratic, and three at tops for cubic. While in the complex field, according to the Fundamental theorem of algebra, there are n solutions.

OpenStudy (zarkon):

a second degree equation is a quadratic

OpenStudy (alfie):

yeah. Flaw in translation. My grade = degree . Lol, for the record in italian degree = "grado" so I kinda literally invented the word! ;)

OpenStudy (alfie):

But as I said, the English may be wrong, but the math up there is pretty right ! :).
