Why does the diffusion of water (osmosis) have its own term? Why isn't it just classified under diffusion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First lets define diffusion: passive transport from an area of high concentration to low concentration. Water does this but so do other molecules that need to enter or leave the cell.Passive transport is a form of diffusion in which small atoms can get in the cell just like water can(high conc. to low conc. no energy required). If we couldn't distinguish the difference with the two forms, then we wouldn't know what diffusion we were talking about. But if you really ask me, scientists just like being difficult :P I hope I answered your question... ===bioboumani===

Ok some my understanding of this article I just read, osmosis is the diffusion of a solute within the solvent(which is water) http://blobs.org/science/article.php?article=20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that's a good article. I'm sorry if I went off track talking about a cell i just wanted to draw comparison study on my friend! ===bioboumani===

yeah, but both osmosis and diffusion are passive transport.
