two boys start from the same place but walk in opposite directions. Joe walks twice as fast as Tom, and in 4 hours they are 24km apart.What is the rate of the speed of each boy?

OpenStudy (lilg132):

joe walks at 4 km an hour while tom walks at 2 km an hour

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks but how do you get the answer

OpenStudy (lilg132):

they way i did it was: You know that they have walked 24 km in distance apart from eachother but you are also told that joe walks twice as fast which means he will cover twice the distance of what tom has covered. so what you do is 24 km / 3 = 8 km 8 km is what tom has covered and because joe is walking twice as fast u times that by 2 = 8 km x 2 = 16 km now to check that is correct u add joe's distance with toms distance = 8 km + 16 km = 24 km now you have also been told that it took them 4 hours to cover this distance. So you need to get the distance of each person tom = 8 km joe = 16 km u divide the distance by the amount of hours to work out how much they cover in 1 hour. so 8 km / 4 hours = 2 km per hour covered by tom so 16 km / 4 hours = 4 km per hour covered by joe dont forget to click on good answer :D

thank you lilg132 :D

OpenStudy (lilg132):

no problem :D

r t = d Let joe and Tom be their speeds respectively. Solve the following for joe and Tom: {joe=2 Tom,4 joe+4 Tom=24} {joe=4 km/h,Tom=2 km/h}
