How can two parents WITHOUT hitchhikers thumb have a child who Does have a hitchhikers thumb?
It could be in 'miss genoration': basicly it's where parents have something, they have kids, they don't hsve it, the kids have kids and those kids have it...

Since hitchhiker's thumb is an autosomal recessive trait, it requires expression of the "hitchhiker's thumb gene" in both alleles of an individual for the actual symptom or manifestation to be expressed. So two parents with only one allele containing the gene can pass on that allele to their offspring which in turn will have two alleles - one from mom, one from dad, that expresses hitchhiker's thumb and the offspring will therefore have hitchhiker's thumb. (alleles are different "types" of one gene, we all have two sets of all genes, one from mom, one from dad (except in the case of the XY chromosomes in males) and in autosomal recessive traits it requires two of the "afflicted" genes for the disease or trait to be expressed, whereas in autosomal dominant traits it requires only one allele, hence the name dominant)

well the phenomenon he describes matched the genotype posted by panumguy. so it's not a bad answer, you just didn't understand it enough! I hope you do respect every answer you get from now on. anyway, panumguy's answer is correct. same goes for actual diseases like sickle cell anemia or albinism.
