What is the effect of Helicobacter pylori on stomach and intestine pH? What is the effect of Helicobacter pylori on stomach and intestine pH? @Health Sciences
it causes the stomach to increase more acid
Doesn't it produce urease and by doing so, also produces ammonium... so what I was investigating is that it reduces pH so kill mucose and produces ulcers.
Actually Luis, H. pylori produces Urease, which generates ammonia from endogenous urea and thereby elevates local gastric pH, but, it's presence on the mucus (it's niche) creates a inflammatory state, that, in turn results in increased acid production state, this way, the mucus around the H. pylori is kept with a higher pH, although the stomach has an very low pH. This low pH, plus the inflammation and other factor create an imbalance between gastroduodenal mucosal defenses and damaging forces. That causes gastritis and eventually peptic ulcers. When this highly acidic environment is pushed to the duodenum (for example, with food) it decreases duodenum pH, and can produce gastric metaplasia in the duodenum.
