what is a negative position

OpenStudy (stormfire1):

It depends on what you've chosen for your axes. Typically though, negative is too the left or down (in a Cartesian plane).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A position at the left of your reference point.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Position is relative to your reference point. If you define a positive position to be in front of you where your location is the origin, then it follows that a negative position is behind you.

|dw:1321245785042:dw| Here is an example of a negative position. The rock is held up above the edge of a cliff and your feet are at 0 meters. Dropping down the cliff is negative, although you could make the bottom of the cliff 0, it's all arbitrary.
