six times the difference between y and eight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(6)(y-8)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what writeon said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can write \[6y-48\] if you like

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks. i just cant understand translating terms.. its soooo freaking confusing ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

try it with numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how? when i dont know waht the phrases mean.. liike 6 times the difference.. it doesnt make sense to me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use ten six times the difference of 10 and 8 10 - 8 = 2 6 times 2 = 12 so putting it together you computed \[6\times (10 - 8)\] then replace 10 by x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

start with the last part of the statement. how do you write the difference between y and 8? difference is another way of saying subtraction. so you get: y-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is true that we don't speak english the way we write math. times is easy enough, but sometimes people write "produce" which means the same thing "difference" usually means " - "

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*product not "produce"!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are 20, your mother is 45 the difference of your ages is 25 ( i am making an example) how did we get the 25? 45 - 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once you have the differnce part figured out, go back to the first part. Six times, which also means multiplication. So you read it as 6 multiplied by y-8. Then you can write it as 6 x (y-8) or (6)(y-8).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so then would x divided by the sum of x and 1 would be |dw:1321243124315:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

awesome. hopefully the understanding part will kick in more n stay there in my head! haha.. tryin to bring my grade up quickly before finals .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol. me too. what level math are you in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pre-algebra

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and that understanding just went down the pooper.. UGH why cant math be simple adding and subtraction and leave it at that!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait until you get to post algebra!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have another problem I could try and work thorugh with you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yah i have tons. haha :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. throw one out. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

two more than the total of a number and five

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Explanation: let's break it into two parts, like the first example.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

total = x + 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. the two more part would mean +2. so then you add two to x+5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would be like (x+5) + 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would you like to try another?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha yes plz

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. ask away!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

six times the difference between a number and three. im guessing its 6(x-3)
