Thanks

Assume that the function is defined and continous for all points on the domain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i am not sure what this is saying. is it saying that the first derivative is positive then negative?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i will explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is firstly saying that at x1 and x2 the first derivative is equal to zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i think i get it. it looks like at x2 the first derivative goes from being negative to positive. that means your function has a local minimum there. function was decreasing, then increasing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The function is increasing until it reaches x1 at x1 it begins to decrease until x2 and at x2 it bebegins increasing again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but notice that at x1 it is undefined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, and the derivative changes sign there, so it could look like this|dw:1321588281375:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think that may be wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

notice in the picture i drew the first derivative goes from being positive to negative but is undefined the corner. also the second derivative is positive always except at the corner, where it does not exist

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because look at the second derivative it is concave up b4 and after x1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it could be wrong, but it fits with the information you are given

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the picture i drew is concave up on both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and at x2 the first derivative is equal to zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry i was just drawing around x1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I think i can just add a litlle curve

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and it will be fine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to show how the first derivative could be positive and then negative, but undefined at the point. i will draw more

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks satellit you are the best!!! ;D
