For m=(-5,-6) and n= (6,-9) find the sum of the vector three times the magnitude of m and the vector two and one half times the magnitude of the opposite of n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

m and n are vectors.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. the vectors we need to add together are: 3m=<-15,-18> and -(5/2)n=<-15,22.5>. Top add vectors, just add the components: <-15+(-15), -18+22.5>=<-30,4.5>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh! I wasn't sure what to do with "5/2" so I left it as positive, which was the cause of my mistake! Thanks for helping me out, eseidl!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have the answer key/is this correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I do and this is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sweet; i started second guessing myself for some reason :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

From what I know, an opposite vector has an opposite direction, but the same magnitude. Does this mean "5/2" is the direction of n? I wasn't sure what to do with it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An opposite vector of n is -n. So (5/2)n is the same direction of n but re-scaled in length by a factor of 5/2. But (-5/2)n is the vector pointing in the opposite direction of n AND re-scaled in length by a factor of (5/2).

Yes. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it! Gotta love the internet

for sure; and np :)
