The way the possible answers are phrased it's the only one that made sense. The British didn't have any colonies in Japan, The Japanese didn't have a goal of ruling all of Asia or even a hegemony over southeast Asia till later on [1900's], due to the backwards nature of their institutions. In fact Japan sent out fact finding missions to western nations to determine how they might modernize all facets of life in Japan so that they could gain equal footing with the rest of the world.
