satellite73 (satellite73):

an example of two disconnected sets A, B whose union and intersection are connected

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and they have to be in R no less!

OpenStudy (zarkon):

\[A=[0,1)\cup(1,3)\] \[B=[1,2]\cup[3,4]\]

OpenStudy (zarkon):

that work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok let me think...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they are certainly disconnected

OpenStudy (anonymous):

intersection is (1,2]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

union is [0,4] looks good to me

OpenStudy (zarkon):

that's what I think ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

many thanks. i had a dumb idea that "disconnected" meant the sets were "disjoint" but that was silly

OpenStudy (zarkon):

ah...that would make it hard to do :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

impossible i would say. thanks again

OpenStudy (zarkon):

yes
