The vibrations produced by a jackhammer are used to break up pavement. What type of waves did/does the jackhammer produce into the ground?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are there choices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Transverse waves , Longitudinal waves , or Surface waves

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think surface waves, because the waves are on the surface, similar to an earthquake

Never thought about it that way. I kinda figured Longitudinal but even so that was just a guess. Thanks

No prob, if I'm wrong, Im soo sorry, but it depends on what your teacher has taught you as well.

Pressure waves are longitudinal waves. Surface waves are complex, and typically occur at the interface between two media, like waves on the surface of the ocean. A jackhammer would create pressure waves that broke up the pavement, so they would be longitudinal.
