the picture of a moth in a dictionary is drawn to the scale 1:6. If the length of the moth in the picture is 3/6" the actual length of the moth in inches is: a)2" b)2 1/8" c)1 7/8" d)2 1/2" e) none of these

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

if the scale is 1:6, it means that every unit, say 1cm, of the picture in the dictionary, is equivalent to 6cm of the real moth. so then the equation would be x:6x since 1:6(1) so then we need to break down 3/6 to the lowest possible fraction before we proceed 3/6 = 1/2 => 1/2 : 6 (1/2) 1/2 : 6/2 1/2 : 3

thx saso!

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

hence the actual size of the moth is 3" but it's not in the answers so the answer is e) none of these
