why do I need to know how to solve math?
I don't know!
I learn math cos i think it's cool, but what is it's actual significance in life? why should i know the algorithms in algebra and calculus, why should i bother my brain to know how a certain step in solving a problem becomes what it is, it's almost useless cos other ppl have already solved it so why should i solve it?
the following are some reasons why you need math: you need to achieve a certain level in maths to get most jobs - most employers want this before they will consider you/ also maths is good exercise for the mind.
the algorithms and such are presented so that we do not have to reinvent the wheel each time we need to use it :)
math is more than written notation to torture high school students with :) it is a practical means of modeling real world situations to find plausible solutions
in order to send your love letter to the correct person sitting in row 3 column 5 of the auditorium; how would you construct the proper delivery system?
the resulting trials and errors would invoke a system which you could write down and record the results; and determine which ones performed the best so that next time you would not have to reinvent it all over again :)
lol - good amis!
You can practically not think of a life without math. You need to have a basic knowledge of math for joining any job. I'm not sure how algebra helps though.

because otherwise there would be many math teachers out of a job, which would lead to a dangerous situation of roving bands of unemployed math teachers terrorizing the civilian population and not just school students. the citizenry would never stand for such a thing, so stay in school and keep this dire consequence at bay.
You learn math, algorithms and proofs because it trains your mind to think logically and systematically. Its like training your muscles to write. Once you learn to write, you can write any time, anything, anywhere. Once you learn to think through problems logically, the steps, the reasoning, what follows and what does not follow, these things will be useful in problems you will encounter. Sometimes you will encounter mathematical problems, but often the situations may be non mathematical. But the mental muscles are trained to think logically and will do so. You may be thinking about whether you should buy this car or that car - lots of math to figure out payments and all that. Or whether your boss likes you or not, just logic and reasoning, cause and effect etc, no math, but the mental muscles are still trained to help you think through all this.
