Help please: 3(x-4)=2x+8+5x+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So far I got 3x-12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

on the left. right side should be \[7x+12\] by combining like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Distribute the 3 into (x-4) => 3x-12=2x+8+5x+4 Add up all the x terms and all the non-x terms: 3x-12=7x+12 Add 12 to each side and subtract 7x from each side: -4x=24 divide by each side by -4: x=-6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so u added the 5x + 2x and 8+ 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks

You just have to think of x as an object. You had 5 x's and you added 2 x's so you have 7 x's.
