Why did workers in the late 1800s tolerate poor wages and working conditions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The workers were unorganized and it was either work or starve.

Industrialization led to many new jobs in the cities. Many poor farmers left to find work in the cities for a better life. In Europe, there were more people looking for jobs in the cities than there were jobs. This led many Europeans to begin migrating to the United States in hopes of a better life. In the late 1800s steam ships made ocean travel quick and safe. People had to take the jobs they were offered and industries exploited the workers because they could make large profits with low over head. Immigrants in the United States were also at a disadvantage because they had no support systems and they faced language and cultural barriers. They were easy to take advantage of.

it might be because the workers knew money was hard to come by.
