what is the major difference between a torque and a couple in forces

OpenStudy (anonymous):

From a physics stand point, torque is the cross product of the force vector and the perpendicular distance to the force. \[\tau = r \times F\] While a couple is a system of forces that have a resultant torque but no resultant force. In other words, a torque can cause rotation and translation, while a couple can only cause rotation.

thanks eashmore keep on helping me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You got it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really eashmore

I don't have anything to add relating to this problem. Do you have another question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but different from the previous one. a student drives his car 6km north before making aright turn and driving 6km east. finally the student makes a left hand turn and travels another 2km to the north.find the overall magnitude of the student.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I assume you want to the straight line distance from the start point to the end point and not the total distance travelled by the driver. We can use triangles or vectors. Which do you prefer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

triangles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we need to use pythagorean's theorem. \[\text {Distance} = \sqrt{N^2 + E^2}\]where N is the total distance travelled north and E is the total distance travelled east.

oky thank you
