Annoying algebra problems. Solve and graphing inequalities.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[-4x \le -24\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If that was an equation, how would you get the x value on its own? i.e.\[-4x=-24\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Divide -4 to -24 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Bingo! So you do exactly the same thing here. There's one caveat though, when you multiply/divide an INequality by a negative number, the inequality switches directions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The thing is, I know that the answer is x=6. But i have to graph it. and i get confused when it switches

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH so it does switch! :D Whoo! Thanks so it would go from point left to write?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if you have \[-5 \le -3\], when you multiply by (for example) -2, you get \[(-5)(-2) \le (-3)(-2)\]\[10 \le 6\]. Clearly, 10 is not less than 6, so negative numbers mean you point the inequality symbol the other way.
