what is mitosis & meosis

OpenStudy (blues):

Both are cell division processes. In mitosis, a somatic cell replicates its DNA then divides to make two new diploid somatic cells. In meiosis, the cell replicates its DNA then divides twice (without replicating its DNA again) to form four gametes which are haploid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mitosis is the division of cells (not reproduction related). Two diploid cells are created, and this is typically for the purpose of growing, replacing lost cells, etc. Meiosis is the division of cells for reproduction, and there is two parts, labeled Meiosis I and Meiosis II. This forms four haploid gametes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mitosis is division of somatic cells to make identical daughter cells. meiosis is the division of sex cells resulting in daughter cells with half the original number of chromosomes.
