Simplify: (k/2)(5k-1) + 5(k+1)-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I ended up with 20^2 + 2 (which I think is incorrect). What did you come up with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know what to do with the k/2...i distributed the second part. got 5k+2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not supposed to solve for K, just combine it into one equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can't solve for anything, there's no equal sign, you can only simplify it, it's not an equation, it's an expression

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when I move from what you said you did I come up with 20k^2 - 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its part of a mathematical induction equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so this isn't the entire problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well its supposed to look like ((k+1)/2) (5k+4). I need to get that top expression to look like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(k/2)(5k-1) + 5(k+1)-3 = ((k+1)/2) (5k+4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this the answer at the back of the text?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, but I need to show the steps how I got the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well i was getting it wrong so here http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=Simplify%3A+%28k%2F2%29%285k-1%29+%2B+5%28k%2B1%29-3 multiply the k+1 by the 1/2 and you'll get your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok great...thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you're welcome
