Generally speaking, computer science is the formal study of computational theory and such. Amongst other things, it means studying the mathematical underpinnings of programming. It's occasionally used more broadly to include software engineering without that formal an underpinning. IT is usually used to refer to maintenance and management of computers in mid-size to large organizations. This means knowing the front end of software and how to configure the underlying servers, networks, and fix various issues with these and with individual machines. Now, some people conflate the two or use them interchangeably, but generally the above are the divisions.
