who is TT ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
TuringTest
OpenStudy (anikate):
what is x in this equation?
6+x=2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-4
OpenStudy (anikate):
good job that was basic

I have been studying basic algebra.
OpenStudy (anikate):
x^2*x^3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x^5
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x+y=6
x-y=7
can you find the x and y?
OpenStudy (anikate):
(x^3)^2

Anikate, he meant me.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
FFM give me another one
OpenStudy (anikate):
oh ok...
OpenStudy (anonymous):
\( a+b=9 \)
\( a-b=11 \)
what is \( a \) and what is \(b\) ?

a=10
b=-1
or
a=9-b
b=9-a
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay .. do you understand the difference between variable and constant?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
variable is something you put instead of a number, right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
More importantly, do you understand what in earth an equation means?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Excuse me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):
Precisely, variable is something that varies, so yes you are right :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Were you just calling me stupid?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No,lol :D you misunderstand my tone :)
So what is an equation ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Its a line that states values of variables, i guess
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Hm. Let me explain.

A equation has two parts, right hand side and left hand side.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I know that
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Anything right of the '=' sign is right hand side
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I know, if you do something to the LHS you have to do the same to the RHS
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yadda yadda, i know all that.

Good :D
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Hey, that's not the right attitude towards mathematics :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
anyways back to the problem our hand:
a+b=9
a−b=11
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yeah.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
we want to find a and b in terms of constants only.

OpenStudy (anonymous):
So whats a constant?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
How could we do that ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
constant is something which value is fixed.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok, so we can subtract a from both sides to get b on the top one, right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Why don't we add the equations?
like this \[ a+b+a-b=9+11\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh you want me to use both equations?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Well we can simplify that to a2=20, right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Cause the b's cancel eachother out
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
And for a we can just divide both sides by 2 getting x=10

OpenStudy (anonymous):
a=10*
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Good, now what about b ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
a+b+a−b=9+11
a2 +b=20+b
Am i doing alright so far?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no, you need to subtract this time
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Subtract what exactly?

a+b-a+b=9-11
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Is is (a+b)-(a+b) or without parenthesis?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
second equation from the first.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh i see, this si the second one?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
(a+b)-(a-b) without parentheses

a+b-a+b=9-11
2b=9-11
2b=-2
b=-1

See? I can do this!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Very good :)

:D

If
ax - a = x - 1
what is x equal to?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Divide both sides by x, right so far?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No wait,
ax - a = x - 1
ax=x-1+a
x=x-1
Im stumped
OpenStudy (anonymous):
First, bring all the x terms to one side, and everything else to the other.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Im sorry, i havent studied factoring yet :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok. Here's the solution
ax - a = x - 1
ax - x - a = -1
ax - x = a - 1
x(a - 1) = a - 1
hence
x = 1
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok, youll have to give me another one tommorrow so i can try :D
