can someone show me how to do this: n+5=2n-6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first subtract n from both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then add 6 to both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract what though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract the varible n from the left side to cancel it out, and anything you do to the left you must also do to the right side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can subtract the letter n from both sides so that n is only one one side of the equal sign. The left side will be left with only 5 and the right side will have one less n than before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first you need to get n on its own

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what happens to the 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2n literally means you have two of the letter n. if you get rid of one, how many are left?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once you have subracted n from both sides, the 2 becomes a 1, because 2n is basically n+n.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay! so the answer is n=11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or you can say n is really 1n meaning that it has an imaginery coificent of 1 and look at it like i'm doing the following operation 2-1=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, you can check this by substituting 11 into the equation, instead of n :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I got it now, thank you everyone!!

no problem!
