If a book was originally published in 1885 and then was published again in 1981, which date do you use in your citation or do you use both. For example: Author Mark Twain, the title of the book is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Originally published in 1885 with Bantam books publishing an edition in 1981. Bantam books is in New York.

Cite the edition you are using - I'm guessing the 1981 edition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cite the 1981!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There also is a website to help you cite... google cite and see if you can find it. In my school when I look up the books and articles I am to look at there also is a cite button to get the correct APA format.

I use bibme.org for that purpose, but the citation it creates is only as good as the information you put in....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But 1981 is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes (assuming runnerchick didn't get her hands on the 1885 edition ;)

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

dittman is right. you use the publication date of the copy you are using. Most likely this is 1981, but if you happen to have gotten your mitts on a 1885 edition, you are not only lucky, but you should also use the date 1885 in the citation.

Thank you. That is what I thought was correct. I am doing a series of APA exercises so I don't actually have the either edition. I am going to assume that the reason they gave me the first date is to that I knew it was a 2nd edition. Would it then be appropriate in the citation to put in the edition?

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Only if it is stated as an edition (i.e. American Psychiatric Association Publication Manual 6th Edition). If it is simply a second publication date do not give it an edition number.

Thank you so much!
