Hi-My question is related to how to cite a report that is written to the funding source.....So the report is from folks at MSU who received a federal grant from CMS to conduct research and develop a training program. I need to cite the report, but am not sure if there are certain rules about citing a federally funded grant report. Thanks

If the report is in the public domain there should be no restrictions, but asking either party couldn't hurt. Reports like this are commonly cited, but in what manner and document will you cite it may have some influence. Otherwise follow the style you normally use for citations.

I would probably cite it as grey literature. There are a couple ways to do this depending on where, when, and whom published the document. If the document has an author listed the citation and reference page entry would look something like this: Citation: (Authors last name, year, page or paragraph number [only if direct quote]) Reference: Last, FirstInitial. MiddleInitial. (year, exact date if available). Title of report [capitalize only the first word]. (Name of the reporting organization and report number if available). [If retrieved from the Internet: Name of website [include the word website]: URL. If not retrieved from the Internet: Place of publication [City and State abbreviation]: Name of the printing office.] If the author is an organization everything is the same except you replace the author with the issuing organization's name and the citation would go: (Name of Organization [Abbreviation of organization in square brackets only if necessary AND if citing the source more than once], year, page or paragraph number [only if direct quote]) Here are a couple of practical examples: Citations: According to Doe (1999), "Funds were dispersed according to university policy," (p.2). Grant funds went to the Department of Archaeology and the Computer Science department (Doe, 1999). "Funds are now fully dispersed," (Michigan State Universitty Accounting Office [MSU-AO], 1999, para. 19). Further consideration will not be given to other departments at this time (MSU-AO, 1999, p. 9). References: Doe, J. (1999, September 18). Financial allotment (Grant Report College Board Rep. No. 67-2). Retrieved from Michigan State University website: www.msu.edu Michigan State Universitty Accounting Office. (1999). Financial allotment (Grant Report). East Lansing, MI: Michigan State University Publishing Office. Keep in mind that this is according to the American Psychiatric Association Publication Manual, 6th Edition. If you are using MLA consult your manual on how to cite grey literature.
