What sorts of questions do adverbs or adverb phrases answer? I think it's easiest to think of this by a process of elimination, since adverbials answer so many different types of questions. Nouns are easy. Most of them you can identify because you can put a "the" in front of them: the car, the house, the store, and so on. Adjectives then tell you something about some noun. They usually can be put into this order: the ADJECTIVE NOUN. The red car, the tall house, the small store. Note that verbals can fill this slot: the racing car, a drinking fountain. In these cases, "racing" and "drinking" are both functioning as adjectives. Verbs are the hinge of the sentence: they make the statement. Verbs are easy to recognize by form because you can say "I VERB," You VERB," "he VERBS." If you can't make the word in question fit that pattern, it's not a verb. All the stuff to the right of the verb usually pertains to the subject. All the stuff to the left of it usually pertains to the predicate. (That's in a sentence that follows the standard S-V-O order.) Adverbs -- usually trickier to spot -- say something about the verbs. They answer questions like how, why, for what reason, when, where, and so on. In this case, the phrase "into the mechanical pencil" tells you where you are loading the lead. It has reference to the verb ("to load") and it answers the question "where?"

Well, I'm a bit rusty. This is good practice for me! But I hope you're getting something out of all of this. Having the correct answers without knowing why they are correct, and being able eventually to do it yourself, only gets you so far. Not to sound old-fashioned or anything.
