Freedom of speech disappeared during WW I for anyone critical of the war effort. True Or False?
name the time and place? Some places in that time didn't have freedom at all. In world war 2 Japanese Americans were sent to interments, just because their parents were born in a different place. Those were Americans like you and me and when those American needed their government and rights the most. The only right they had was "right this way". into interments camps.
True In June 1917 Congress passed the Espionage Act which allowed authorities to ban treasonable or seditious newspapers, magazines, or printed material. Authorities tended to harshly treat and harass those opposed to the war effort. It also enacted several penalties for anyone engaged in disloyal or treasonable activities. Anyone found interfering with the war effort could be charged a 10,000 dollar fine or sentenced to jail for 20 years. In 1918 Congress passed the Sedition Act which limited freedom of speech even more by making it unlawful to use "disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language" about the American form of government, the Constitution, or the military forces. The Court ruled in 1919 in the case of Schenck v. United States that there are times when the need for public order is so pressing that the First Amendment (allowing freedom of speech, press, and religion) does not apply.
