name the compound found in draeger so when a person who is being drunk(alcohol) blows air in that it shows green colour..
potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) will turn to chromium (III) sulfate (Cr2(SO4)3) when exposed to alcohol. potassium dichromate is yellow-ish, chromium (III) sulfate is green.
uhmm.. can u write the reaction ..
2 Cr2O7 2- + 3 C2H5OH + 16 H+ ---> 4 Cr 3+ +3 C2H4O (acetic acid) + 11 H2O
\[2Cr{_2}O{_7}{^-}{^2} + 3C{_2}H{_5}OH + 16H{^+} \rightarrow 4Cr{^+}{^3} + 11H{_2}O + 3CH{_3}COOH\]
the H+ is sulfuric acid - hence the actual final green chromium product is Cr2(SO4)3 as JFraser stated previously.
thanks Ochy, you beat me to the punch!
hmm.. but guys the name of compound is boric oxide as far i know that in dreeger boric oxide along with sulphuric acid it is present and when air comes in it contain ethanol and the colour it gives is green now plz u tell me which is correct ans..??
and the reaction u stated which of them show green colour Cr or ch3cooh???
boric oxide is colorless, as far as I know. Chromium ions (Cr+3) are green when dissolved in water. CH3COOH is acetic acid, and is colorless
but here there is no water how can u say??
there is water, just not shown in the reaction because it only acts as a carrier for the ions
y its oxide is colourless i dont think because beady materials which are attahed to dresses for making it attractive it just a crystalline material but it have colour..
beads made from boric oxides have metal salts added to them to give them color.
well i just google and u wer right what u said but the reason i told it is also correct ...
i m showing u the reaction H3B03 + C2H5OH + H2SO4--------> (C2H50)3B blue green compound
Thanks Heena - Thats good to know!
yw sir i m just trying to relate chemistry with our daily life..
