Whats a real world example for equations of a line? Like in what situation would I use it??

OpenStudy (akshay_budhkar):

Depends on what you are doing ahead :P hehe If u do ahead to do research it is very helpful.;. Also it is a base for many other mathematical concepts u will learn further... I somehow cannot think of a real life example, lemme crack my head maybe i will find 1

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Lots of examples. Here's one: You're having a great party and are deciding between the best two caterers in town. One charges $200 base + $15 a person, and the other charges $100 base + $25 a person. Which of the two firms is going to be cheaper and how does it depend on the number of guests you have?

Here's another. You go on a trip to Australia and decide to go scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef. You learn in the scuba course that you need to figure out how long your air will last underwater. It turns out the pressure under water is Pressure = 1 + (x/10) where x is the depth in meters. That's the equation of a straight line. You can use that formula to figure out your dive time. I'm a SCUBA Divemaster; I do that sort of calculation all the time.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Here's another. Your cousin and you are driving from LA to the Grand Canyon. He leaves 2 hours before you and you know he's going to drive at the speed limit. How fast do you have to drive so you arrive at the Grand Canyon at the same time? You model this situation with straight lines.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Straight lines are so basic in modern human life, it's hard to imagine living in the 21st century without understanding them.

OpenStudy (vanz):

Thank you!
