I don't really know what that's supposed to mean. But this was the answer that I got for the exact same question when I asked my English professor.
Maybe he means small or big writing or somethin of that sort.

500 words isn't a lot, like a page in times new roman 12, double-spaced, so the paragraphs would be really small. More like like 2 paragraphs, or one big one.

I think it should be enough but I actually depends on what font size you are using and how long each of you're paragraphs are but it should be sufficient :)

My 11 paragraph essay is a little over 1,200 words. So, I think you'll be OK. Just some things to remember. A paragraph is, at the very least, 5 sentences: a topic sentence, at least 3 supporting sentences, and a closing sentence. Good luck!

Laura is right. 500 words is not a lot.

@Laura: It's more than a page at those settings. We use APA, so all my papers are 12pt TNR, double spaced. I picked on at random (It's 5000 words). Page 1 and 2 together are 533 words and 5.5 paragraphs. I picked 2 other random consecutive pages in the same document and it was 561words and 4 paragraphs. Comparing the 2 example 1 has several paragraphs in which the last line is only a few words and in example two the paragraphs take up at least half the line.

Just thought I'd throw some empirical data into the discussion.

@Cuteangel & rooneyful: What the instructor may have meant by writing style is simply whether you tend to write long or short paragraphs. Whenever you create a paragraph you create whitespace. Indention at the beginning and often at least a little white space at the end (sometimes a lot). Therefore, the more paragraphs you have (the shorter they are) the less you can fit on a page.
