using the graph of y = x2 + 4x – 5 how do I know if that function has a minimum or a maximum?

myininaya (myininaya):

well how you really need to do is see if coefficient of x^2 is neg or pos

myininaya (myininaya):

neg=> max pos=>min

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at the coeeficient 'a'. the general form of parabola is ax^2 + bx If a is positive, then it would have a minimum since it concaves up If a is negative, then it would have a maximum since it concaves down

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This function has a minimum but no maximum.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a quadratic because the highest exponent in the equation is 2. The x^2 is positive, so the graph will be pointing upward. So it'll look like a kind of U shape, which means that there will be a minimum.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And the minimum is \(\frac{-D}{4a} \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

at \( x =\frac{-b}{2a} \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is basically the coordinates of the vertex what we are looking for here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so since my graph does "U" shape then it is a maximum?
