How many did bloody mary kill?
About 284 persons were executed during the reign of Queen Mary Tudor (1553-1558). She started out with the intention of being merciful, ( even to Lady Jane Grey, who had usurped her throne for 9 days). She also allowed those cronies of her father Henry VIII's who had benefited from his Dissolution of the Monasteries to keep former church properties. This failed to appease her enemies and possibly even emboldened them. After the Wyatt Rebellion in 1554, she was convinced to crack down and allowed Lady Jane Gey, the other conspirators and many other intransigent Protestants to be executed. For comparison's sake: During her brother Edward VI's short reign, at least 5,000 Catholics who objected to the imposition of Protestant liturgy were put to death during the Prayerbook Rebellion. During the reign of her father Henry VIII, as many as 72,000 may have died for their refusal to accept the new religious order, particularly during the Pilgrimage of Grace and the above-mentioned Dissolution. Mary's sister and successor Elizabeth had a long and bloody reign during which Penal Laws and Recusancy laws deprived thousands of either life, liberty, property or all 3. For each one who was executed, many more died of Gaol Fever or want or were forced into exile. So Bloody Mary was preceded by Bloody Henry and Bloody Edward and succeeded by Bloody Elizabeth. It would be simpler to refer to them all as the Bloody Tudors.
