Each year millions of people take the SAT Verbal test as an entrance exam for college. Most people score near the mean, with few in the outer tails. A high school student wishes to compile SAT Verbal results from her school. She builds a histogram with classes 200 - 299, 300 - 399, 400 - 499, 500 - 599, 600 - 699, 700 - 800. If the school's SAT Verbal scores mirror the national averages, what shape of histogram will she get?Select the radio button corresponding to the correct answer. a. Bimodal symmetric B.Bimodal skewed C.Unimodal symmetric D.Unimodal skewed E.Uniform

If most people score near the mean, what does that tell you about the number of "modes" that the histogram has? Similarly if few score in the outer tails, does that tell you that the histogram is skewed (ie. that there tend to be more people on one side of the mode) or symmetric (ie that there are approximately the same number on both sides)?

unimodal skewed

It's definitely unimodal, but why do you think it is skewed, rather than symmetric? It says that there are few people in the outer tails. If it said that there were more people above the mean than below (or vice versa), then it would be skewed. With the information given in the problem, the distribution is symmetric.
