A capacitor is connected across a battery why does each plate receive acharge of the same magnitude ?Will it be true even if the plates are of different sizes?
Because both the plates are connected to the terminals of same battery, if battery is providing 12 volts means +12 to one plate and -12 to another plate. it is not possible for a battery to provide different voltages at a same time. one more thing, if charges on both the plates will not be equal and opposite, the no displacement current will produce, which ultimately defines the working of a capacitor. thanks
Yes plates receive a charge of the same magnitude. Because dielectric medium between the plates is same for both plates, this dielectric medium produces charges on each plate when capacitor is connected to the battery. TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING: Can you visualize how the plates can be different in size and what will the amount of charge stored by each plate?
Sorry I forgot my sign Regards, Electronics engineer. :D
