What should be true of a molecule being used as a molecular clock? Answer It has a consistent rate of neutral mutations from generation to generation. It is a rare molecule that is not found in many living species that might be compared. Its mutations always affect the phenotype, making it easier to observe the changes. It serves an unnecessary function, making it less likely to be preserved over time.

"It has a consistent rate of neutral mutations from generation to generation." is the correct answer. To put this in another way, it is much easier to accurately know when an hour has passed if all minutes on your watch are 60 second long than if each minute would randomly vary between 20 seconds and 100 seconds.
