Basically what the bills are going to do it put sites where the users create content liable for any content the users create. Basically if I were to post a link to an illegal copy of copyrighted content here on OpenStudy, the entire site can be shut down.

The bills threaten the heart and soul of what the internet is, a platform for free and open information sharing. If you are a US citizen, please take time to contact your representatives and senators to share your concern with the bills.

Well, not entirely. The owners of the content (generally large media comapnies) can submit to have any site sharing their content shut down. While this may be a good move to prevent piracy, the power is too broad and is likely to be taken advantage by companies to remove competitors from the internet.

Poke around the net and read up on the bills. There is PLENTY of information around on the internet on the bills. Read them for yourself and form your own personal opinions on them. Thats the way democracy works!

The bills will allow the government to censor the content of the internet, allowing users to only see what is currently allowed. In countries like China, the internet is already censored. The fear is the in the United States, we will lose the freedom that our country stands for on the internet. The freedom to share and consume and information.
