The length of a rectangle is twice the width. The area is 648yd^2. Find the length and the width.

OpenStudy (darthsid):

Do you know how to calculate the area of a rectangle? What's the formula for it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A=l times w. I set it up this way. Let the length = 2w and the width = w, so with area being 648, the equation is 648=2w(w) correct?

OpenStudy (darthsid):

That's exactly right, nice work!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, then after I come up with 648=2w^2, I get lost!! Do I square both sides?

OpenStudy (darthsid):

No, you first divide both sides by two to get 324=w^2

OpenStudy (darthsid):

Now, to find w, you have to take the square root of both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, then I square both sides?

OpenStudy (darthsid):

ok let me explain a little: Squaring sides means raising it to the power of two (multiplying by itself twice) so, square of w is w^2 Square root means the reverse of the above. So you need to take the square root of the sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so it would be the square root of 324=w

OpenStudy (darthsid):

Exactly!
