how do you turn a decimal into a fraction?

hero (hero):

.1 = 1/10 As a decimal, you describe .1 as "one-tenth" because it means the same as 1/10 Get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sooo, 3.4 would be 3 2/5?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

as a mixed fraction, yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the other fraction called again?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

improper fraction

OpenStudy (turingtest):

ah I had forgotten, thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thank you very much

myininaya (myininaya):

what about writing this as a fraction: \[.5124124124124\cdots\] So first let \[x=.5124124124124\cdots\] So \[10000x=5124.124124124124 \cdots \] So if we take the 2nd equation-10*1st equation we get \[10000x-10x=5124.124124\cdots -5.124124124124 \cdots \] \[9990x=5124-5\] \[9990x=5119\] so this means \[x=\frac{5119}{9990}\] But remember what we called x? => \[\frac{5119}{9990}=.5124124124124\cdots\]

hero (hero):

myininaya, I had a feeling you were going to turn this into a lecture.
