If 10% of the men is voting for X and 6% of the women is voting for X, how many % of the population is voting for X?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are we assuming an equal number of men and women? if so then 8%

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Let the total population of men be 100 and of women be 100 so 10 men vote for x and 6 women vote for y so total 16 people vote out of 200 16/200* 100= 8% assuming equal no. of men and women

OpenStudy (anonymous):

an easy trick if this is confusing is use numbers. say there are 50 women and 50 men, for a total of 100 people. then 10% of 50 is 5 and 6% of 50 is 3, 5+3 = 8 and 8 is 8% of 100

as you can see ash used the same trick with different numbers, so the point is that the actual numbers don't matter, you can use any you like

Thanks! :) But what if the population consists of 52% men?
