A student notices that a group of ivy plants growing in a cool room of a building grow at a different rate than a group of the same kind of ivy growing in a warm room in the same building. The student wants to find out why the two groups of plants grow at different rates. Explain how she could carry out an experiment using all of the steps of a scientific process.

The student could split each group into two parts and measure the growth rate of each group in both the cold and the warm rooms. In this way the student could be sure that any difference in growth rate was not due to intrinsic differences between the groups of plants. I guess the hypothesis would be that the temperature causes the difference and splitting the groups would provide controls for the growth rate measurements. An ideal control is one where everything else is the same except for the variable in question (temperature in this case).
