The internal resistance of a cell is like any other resistance. It has the same properties with the basic difference that the resistance is placed inside the cell only.

Therefore, like any other resistance, the laws of series and parallel combination apply here too which in case of series, increases and in parallel, decreases.

For the sake of simplicity, you can imagine the internal resistance as an outer resistance placed in series with the battery. This will help you understand the concepts better.
