Which of the following is an example of a lever? A. knife B. screw C. nutcracker D. pencil sharpener I think it's either A or B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A

OpenStudy (chris):

I agree with Jose - levers are a single bar and pivot point

OpenStudy (chris):

A nutcracker is a "double" lever

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Seriously? We are splitting hairs here? A knife is a wedge first of all. A screw is an inclined plane, and a pencil sharpener is a wedge and if one of those fancy ones, it has gears. The answer is definitely nutcracker.

OpenStudy (chris):

hmmm, I don't understand why a knife is not a lever - I suppose it depends on how it is used.

OpenStudy (chris):

see your point on nutcracker clearly being a lever though.

OpenStudy (chris):

bah, I think you're right

OpenStudy (chris):

knife is two incline planes

OpenStudy (chris):

i.e. wedge

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the main function of a knife? To cut right? The simple machine that cuts is the wedge. Because we are evolutionary creatures, we have figured out that we can cut with more power if we use the knife in a lever fashion. Albeit, a knife is a wedge at its core.

OpenStudy (chris):

yep =) I think you're right. Just found this resource that backs it up: http://www.edheads.org/activities/simple-machines/glossary.shtml
