There are two types of waves: progressive and stationary.  

Progressive move through space and time and transfer energy with them.  For example, water waves at the beach, sound waves from your stereo, or light from the sun.

Stationary waves don't propagate through space, but oscillate right where they are.  Imagine a violin or piano string vibrating in the vacuum of space.  They have a wave motion, but that wave isn't moving and transferring its energy to anyone or anything else.
