All cells are surrounded by a cell membrane, a thin structure with tiny openings ( pores ) that covers the cell and holds it together.

The cell membrane is something called a "lipid bilayer". It has hydrophilic heads on either surface and hydrophobic tails that make up the inside structure. It is embedded with many different proteins of various function. Many of these proteins shuffle substances from inside the cell out, or vice versa.
