what does median mean again?

OpenStudy (phi):

the number exactly in the middle of a sorted list of numbers If you have an even number then it is the average to the 2 middle numbers example: 1 2 3 2 is the median 1 2 3 4 (2+3)/2 = 2.5 is the median remember, *sorted*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Median is the middle point of a set of numbers. Usually found by taking the first and last numbers (when in chronological order) adding them together and dividing them in half.

OpenStudy (phi):

@psy you have to be careful, because the average of the min and max does not give you the median: 1 1 2 3 5 its median is 2 but (5+1)/2 = 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what if im looking for the middle number of a median and their is no middle number theirs two middle numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 8 6 8 10 12 14 16 18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which one would it be?

OpenStudy (phi):

you take the average of the two middle numbers (add them, divide by 2) here's a short example 1 2 3 4 (2+3)/2 = 2.5 is the median

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're right. Sorry, I thought it was always true.

OpenStudy (phi):

but 4 8 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 had a middle number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i would get 11 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no 16

OpenStudy (phi):

I repeat 4 8 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 has a single middle number (4 below it and 4 above it)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yer riht ha lol its 10 my bad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you have an odd number of give digits, then the mode is located in the problem. It's when you have an even number that you would have to do the add and divide.

OpenStudy (phi):

@psy you mean "mean" (not mode)

OpenStudy (phi):

@kat yes, median is 10 (counting can be sooo tricky...)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes lol haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I meant median instead of mode.
